Thousands raised for Pembrokeshire campsite crash victims

August 15, 2023

Thousands of pounds have been raised for the victims of a car crash at a campsite in Pembrokeshire.

The car came off the road and collided with a number of people and a tent where a young child was sleeping on Saturday night.

The collision at the campsite in Newgale, Pembrokeshire, on the southwest Wales coast happened at around 10.30pm.

A friend of the victims has set up a GoFundMe page to raise money to support the families while those injured recover.

Over £2,000 has so far been raised of the £5,000 target.

Organiser Brian Hurley said the families of the injured were "now in serious risk of facing hardship after five of my closest friends ended up in hospital after this terrifying incident".

"Two dads have undergone emergency surgery and will be in hospital for some time as they are unable to work to support their families," he added.

Among those injured were Dan Staniforth and his partner Emma Lou Lewis.

Of the nine people injured, Dyfed-Powys Police said three people remained in hospital, two of whom were seriously injured.

The force said in a statement on Monday that the car involved, a blue Ford Fiesta, contained "a number of occupants".

Police confirmed no arrests had been made and officers have asked for speculation to be "minimised" as they appealed for anyone with information to get in touch.

Local county councillor, Peter Morgan told Sky News, the community was "in shock" but "relieved" that no one was killed in the "unbelievable" incident.

"I've been talking to people this morning who were on the scene on Saturday night and they were saying 'how on earth was nobody killed?' They don't know. It's unbelievable," he said.

Clare Harris, who runs the campsite with her husband Mike, said: "The car was speeding down the hill, realised it needed to slow down and tried to brake.

"It flipped and rolled several times, and crashed into the tent. There was a young child, a baby, in the tent at the time, thankfully they are okay."

Mr Harris said the car was going "at least three times the speed limit" when it "had to brake and lost control".

There was a "lot of noise, a lot of screaming and shouting", according to Levi Davies, 24, from the Gwent area, who was staying at the campsite when the crash happened.

Dyfed-Powys Police said the car is believed to have been travelling from the direction of Roch toward the city of St Davids when it "lost control and veered off the road".
