Man to be executed with lethal injection over 1984 murders and rapes in Florida

June 15, 2023

One of the longest-held inmates on Florida's death row is set to be executed for two separate killings in 1984.

Duane Owen will be executed on Thursday for the murder and rape of Karen Slattery,14, and the killing and rape of Georgianna Worden, 38.

According to court records, Owen repeatedly stabbed Ms Slattery and then sexually assaulted her on 24 March.

The children which the victim was babysitting were not injured.

Two months later, in May, Owen murdered Ms Worden.

Police said Ms Worden had been sleeping when he broke into her home and struck her in the head with a hammer multiple times before raping her.

One of Ms Worden's children found her body the next morning while getting ready for school.

The death sentence

The 62-year-old is scheduled to receive the death sentence at Florida State Prison in Starke.

Owen also attacked two other women in Palm Beach County who survived - all four attacks occurred just before and after Owen's 23rd birthday.

In a notion to stop the death sentence from going forward, Owen's lawyers argued that he should not be executed on the grounds of insanity.

However, last week the state Supreme Court rejected his latest appeal, and on Wednesday, the US Supreme Court also rejected it.

Court records stated that Owen's mother died when he was 11, and his father took his own life when he was 13.

It also said that Owen was the victim of physical and sexual abuse as a child.

'Schizophrenic and suffers from delusions'

Earlier this month, a defence psychologist testified and said that Owen believes he absorbed the souls of his victims and that they still exist inside him.

Owen's lawyers argued back and said that he is schizophrenic and suffers from delusions.

Prosecutors argued that while Owen has mental health issues, nothing would prevent him from being executed because he is aware it is a punishment for his crimes.

Psychiatrists for the state testified that Owen shows no signs of schizophrenia but instead it is an act that he discusses when being evaluated.

The court records also said the defence argued Owen had dementia and gender dysphoria.

While psychiatrists for the state said, Owen actually had a good memory and did not appear to present himself as female.

They also said that gender dysphoria does not make people more aggressive or cause delusional thinking.

Therefore, psychiatrists concluded that instead, Owen is sexually sadistic.

Owen is one of 293 people on Florida's death row and one of the longest residing there.

Republican Ron DeSantis signed each of the death warrants in the months before announcing he was running for president in the 2024 elections.

Along with his death sentence, Owen has also received six life sentences.
