Thieves steal seafood and meat worth thousands from Australian butcher days before Christmas

Two thieves have raided thousands of pounds worth of seafood and meat from a butchers in South Australia last week.

CCTV caught the suspects breaking into a cool storage room adjoining a butchers at Mount Gambier on the evening of 21 December.

The footage show two men approaching the container around 11.15pm, as one of the men proceeds to break its door with a crowbar.

Once pried open, both suspects enter the unit and reappear carrying bags of produce.

Around $7,000 Australian Dollars (£3,750) worth of seafood and meat was stolen, South Australian Police said.

Shopkeeper Mick Lamond said the men were likely sorting the stock and putting it into a vehicle.

Mr Lamond told Australian media he thought the culprits were "locals to the area".

He added: "The trailer was locked when I left [on Thursday night] so when we opened it up this morning I just thought 'what on earth is going on?'"

As Christmas approaches, Mr Lamond said "it's business as usual" as he managed to restock what was stolen.

"Customers have been understanding if we're short on something", he added.

Seafood is a popular option for Australians during the festive period, especially barbecued prawns.
