Larry Nassar was knifed during an altercation with another inmate at a federal prison in Florida on Sunday, sources familiar with the matter told the AP news agency.

The 59-year-old, who according to one of the sources was stabbed in the back and in the chest, was reported to be in a stable condition.

Nassar, a former doctor for USA Gymnastics, was convicted and sentenced to upwards of 300 years in jail in 2018 after being accused of abuse by more than 250 athletes - including Olympic champion Simone Biles.

He was sentenced in federal court in 2017 to 60 years in prison on separate charges of possessing child sex abuse material.

The following year, he was sentenced to up to 175 years and up to 125 years, respectively, in two separate Michigan courts for molesting female gymnasts under his care.

During victim impact statements in 2018, several athletes told the court that over the course of Nassar's more than two decades of sexual abuse they had told adults what was happening, including coaches and athletic trainers, but that it went unreported.

In December 2021, the victims of Nassar reached a settlement of almost $400m (£302.7m) with USA Gymnastics (USAG), the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) and insurers after a five-year legal battle.

The settlement agreement covered claims brought by Olympic gold medallists including Biles, Aly Raisman and McKayla Maroney - all of whom are among the former doctor's most high-profile victims of sexual abuse.
