Neymar: Paris St-Germain and Brazil star fined £2.6m for construction work at his Rio de Janeiro mansion

July 04, 2023

Brazilian authorities have said that Neymar has been fined £2.6m (16m reais) for breaching environmental rules while building his coastal home.

Local authorities alleged late last month and confirmed on Monday that the luxury home, located in Mangaratiba, Brazil, has violated rules regarding the use and movement of freshwater sources, rocks, and sand.

Mangaratiba's environmental body said in a statement on Monday that environmental infractions were made "in the construction of an artificial lake at the mansion".

Among "dozens of infractions," authorities listed "carrying out work subject to environmental control without authorisation, capture and diversion of river water without authorisation, and removal of land and suppression of vegetation without authorisation".

The initial complaint filed against the Paris St-Germain (PSG) player stemmed from a video he posted on Instagram, which is said to have featured the lake being built on his property.

Authorities cordoned off the site last month and ordered all construction to cease.

It was reported that the football star's father, Neymar da Silva Santos, was arrested for an "environmental crime" after allegedly carrying out "banned" work on the property when it was inspected.

As well as the fine, the case will be probed by the local attorney general's office, the state civil police, and the environmental protection office, among other environmental control bodies.

A spokesperson for Neymar declined to comment on the matter.
