Nancy Pelosi's husband has pleaded not guilty to a drink-driving charge in California.

Paul Pelosi, 82, was charged with driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol causing injury and driving with a 0.08% blood alcohol level or higher.

The charges relate to a car crash in northern California wine country on 28 May and after a DUI test was carried out.

He did not appear in person at Napa County Superior Court on Wednesday and in his place his lawyer, Amanda Bevins, entered not guilty pleas.

He was arrested after a crash in Napa County in May and a blood sample was taken about two hours after the incident, which occurred at 10.17pm, the county's District Attorney's Office said.

Pelosi was driving a 2021 Porsche into an intersection near Yountville when it collided with a 2014 Jeep, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Prosecutors filed the case as a misdemeanour because of the injuries sustained by the 48-year-old driver.

Police did not give details of the injuries or provide further information about the other driver.

Pelosi was released on a $5,000 (£4,100) bail and if convicted, he faces a minimum of five days in jail and up to five years on probation.

He would also be required to take a drink-driver class and install an ignition interlock device in his car - a breathalyser that requires the driver to blow into it before operating the vehicle, prosecutors said.

Nancy and Paul Pelosi have been married since 1963.
