Man pleads guilty to woman's attempted murder in Aberfan

A man has pleaded guilty to the attempted murder of a woman in Aberfan.

Daniel Mihai Popescu, of no fixed abode, admitted attempting to murder Andreea Pintili in the Merthyr Tydfil village and pleaded guilty to wounding with intent at a hearing in Cardiff Crown Court on Thursday.

He also entered a guilty plea to a charge of stalking Ms Pintili between 25 October and 6 December 2023.

The 29-year-old had denied an additional charge of intimidating a witness.

South Wales Police were called shortly before 9.10am on 5 December to reports a woman had been stabbed in Moy Road, Aberfan.

Witnesses said 29-year-old Ms Pintili was pregnant. She was taken to hospital for treatment before being discharged.

Local schools and nurseries were placed under lockdown for several hours as a precaution during the incident.

Popescu is due to be sentenced on 28 May.
