Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers urged to apologise for 'good girl' comment to journalist

February 26, 2024

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has been branded a "dinosaur" by a women's group for calling a journalist a "good girl" during a tense post-match interview.

Both the Scottish Feminist Network and For Women Scotland are calling for the Hoops manager to apologise for the "sexist" comment made following his team's dramatic 3-1 win over Motherwell at Fir Park on Sunday.

It came after Rodgers was asked by reporter Jane Lewis about the Cinch Premiership title race during a radio interview for BBC Sportsound.

Glasgow rivals Rangers are currently sitting at the top of the league with a two-point lead.

Rodgers said: "There's a story been [written] about this group, but we will write our own story."

When asked to elaborate on what he meant, Rodgers said: "No, no, you know exactly what I mean."

Ms Lewis replied: "I'm actually not sure I do exactly know what you mean."

But Rodgers then wrapped up the interview by saying: "Done, good girl, well done."

The BBC told Sky News it was not commenting on the incident.

A spokesperson for the Scottish Feminist Network said: "We thought dinosaurs were extinct."

The group said Rodgers' "throwaway comment" risked encouraging other football fans to behave in a similar way, "demeaning women they work with or engage with".

The spokesperson added: "It's 2024 and we're constantly disappointed that women working in sports still face these sexist comments, particularly from a manager of one of our largest teams.

"Rodgers has a responsibility to set a good example to players, managers and fans when engaging with women trying to do their job. Own up Brendan, apologise to Jane."

A spokesperson at For Women Scotland added: "It's depressing that casual sexism is still so embedded in sport.

"Women's achievements are still underrated and dismissed and their professional status undermined. Rodgers owes the reporter an apology."

Celtic FC was contacted for comment.
