Emergency services were called to Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, following a report of a "large bulldog-type dog" being dangerously out of control.

The alarm was raised at around 5pm on Tuesday.

Police Scotland said the animal first struck in Loudonhill Avenue. A man suffered minor injuries and was taken to University Hospital Hairmyres in East Kilbride for treatment.

A second man was then attacked in the Tinto View area. He suffered serious injuries and was taken to Glasgow's Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.

The dog then attempted to attack an officer and was shot dead by armed police.

In an update on Wednesday afternoon, Police Scotland said the body of the "large bulldog-type dog" was taken for specialist veterinary assessment, but it was "not possible to establish its specific breed or history from this assessment".

Superintendent Steven Espie said: "This was a distressing incident for those involved.

"I would like to reassure the local community that this was a contained incident and there is no further risk to the public.

"There will be a continued police presence in the area while our enquiries continue."

Superintendent Espie added that the incident will be referred to the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner (PIRC), which is protocol when a firearm is discharged during a callout.
