North Wales crash: Fundraiser for families of teens killed raises more than £20,000 - five times its target

November 27, 2023

A fundraiser for four teenagers killed in a crash in North Wales has raised more than five times its initial target.

Jevon Hirst, 16, Harvey Owen, 17, Wilf Fitchett, 17 and Hugo Morris, 18, were all pronounced dead at the scene of the collision near the village of Garreg in Gwynedd last week.

A multi-agency search was launched for the four from the Shropshire area, before their upturned car was discovered, partially submerged in water, last Tuesday.

The mother of Harvey Owen said in a tribute it was "unbearable to think" he would always be 17 and "even harder to accept".

A Just Giving page was set up to help with funeral costs and will be shared between the four families.

With an initial target of £4,000, donations have now reached more than £20,000.

A friend of Hugo's, 18-year-old Matt Richards from Shrewsbury, set up the fundraiser with his sister.

He told Sky News Hugo had been "a big part of [his] school life".

"He was in my circle of friends throughout and was always there for me," he said.

Mr Richards said Hugo was "funny", "easy going" and "would never fail to brighten up your day".

The news of the teenagers' deaths was "a massive shock to the whole town" and has left Mr Richards "devastated".

"To be having a funeral for your child is horrible but having to find the money for it is even worse because I can imagine they're not cheap," Mr Richards added.

He had not expected such a supportive response to the fundraiser.

"Honestly, I didn't even expect to hit 4,000. We aimed for that for it to be split 1,000 each but we have absolutely smashed that and I'm so happy with how it's gone," he said.

"I just couldn't be more thankful to everyone who has donated."

North Wales Police continues to appeal for information as part of its investigation.

The force has asked anyone with dash cam footage travelling on the A4085 between Penrhyndeudraeth to Beddgelert in either direction between 11am on Sunday 19 November, and 10am on Tuesday 21 November, to contact them.
