Rapist Nathan Gillet jailed for 17-year campaign of abuse on Isle of Bute

November 10, 2023

A violent rapist who brutalised a woman and girl during a series of sex attacks has been jailed for 14 years.

Nathan Gillet's campaign of abuse took place on the Isle of Bute, Argyll and Bute, over a 17-year period.

The 50-year-old denied the charges, but was found guilty of 13 offences including rape, sexual assault, and physically assaulting a boy.

At the High Court in Edinburgh on Thursday, judge Lord Armstrong told the first offender: "These crimes of which you have been convicted are disturbing and grave."

Gillet repeatedly attacked one woman between 2002 and 2019. On one occasion, he raped her while she was asleep, intoxicated, and moving in and out of consciousness.

He also repeatedly assaulted a schoolgirl and acted towards her in a threatening and abusive manner. Gillet sexually assaulted her when she was under the age of 13 and then raped her on one occasion when she became a teenager.

The court heard Gillet, from Rothesay, continues to deny responsibility and has been assessed as posing a high risk of reoffending.

'The lasting effect of your conduct on them may be incalculable'

Lord Armstrong said the victim impact statements showed the "devastating and ongoing, long-term negative consequences" of Gillet's actions on their daily lives.

The judge added: "The lasting effect of your conduct on them may be incalculable.

"They have suffered significant and lasting detrimental effects on their health and the quality of their lives - physically, emotionally and psychologically."

As well as the 14-year jail sentence, Gillet has been placed on the sex offenders' register indefinitely.

In addition, he will be supervised for a further five years upon his release from prison.

Lord Armstrong said: "I am satisfied that an extended sentence is necessary in your case in order to provide adequate protection to the public from serious harm."

Defence counsel Simon Gilbride said that Gillet has now lost his home and his business.
