'Contaminated' drinks pulled off shelves in Croatia after several fall ill

November 07, 2023

Several people have become ill in Croatia after consuming drinks that were allegedly contaminated.

Reports of sickness and throat injuries are being investigated - and officials are recommending people to only drink tap water.

Health authorities have ordered "suspected" products to be removed from shops and restaurants - but have not specified what they are.

On social media, posts from shops suggested the drinks may have been Coca-Cola brands.

Coca-Cola in Croatia later said it is "temporarily" withdrawing some of its products - "although our internal analysis has not shown irregularities in the production".

The company also said it would cooperate with the authorities, and it was sending samples for more in-depth analysis.

Health minister Vili Beros said several people have sought medical help for "injuries inflicted by suspected chemical elements" - but most have had mild symptoms.

"There is no need for panic, but there is for caution," added Mr Beros.

The most recent case in the city of Split involved a man who suffered throat issues after a soft drink, police said.

He received medical help - and a similar incident had been reported in the area last month.

One patient admitted to hospital was said to have been treated for chemical injuries to their oesophagus.

"Those are probably some corrosive materials, and we need to see if there are any added elements in the drink," Krunoslav Capak from Croatia's Public Health Institute said.
