The Metropolitan Police officer drove through a red light on their way to an emergency call at around 3pm on 12 October, when they collided with 26-year-old Cristopher de Carvalho Guedes.

The marked police vehicle, which had its lights and sirens on, drove through a red light on Southbury Road, in Enfield, north London, and collided with the Brazilian, who was turning right on a motorbike onto Baird Road.

Mr Guedes died in hospital a day later, and now the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has opened an investigation into the officer involved.

The watchdog reviewed the police's body and dash camera footage and said it would also be speaking to another officer who was involved.

The IOPC said it would be securing video footage from buses in the area to look at CCTV and find witnesses.

The officer who was driving the vehicle will be interviewed under criminal caution.

They have been informed they are under criminal investigation for potential offences of causing death by dangerous driving and causing death by careless or inconsiderate driving.

The officer is also being investigated for potential gross misconduct.

Charmaine Arbouin, IOPC regional director, said in a statement: "This is a tragic incident where a young man has lost his life and our thoughts and sympathies are with Mr Guedes' family and friends both here and in Brazil.

"We have spoken with Mr Guedes' family to explain our role and we will keep them updated as our investigation progresses.

"While our investigation is in its early stages, we have found an indication that a criminal offence may have been committed.

"We will continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Mr Guedes' death and at the end of our investigation, we will then decide whether to refer the matter to the Crown Prosecution Service for a charging decision and decide whether the officer should face disciplinary proceedings."
