October 17, 2023

A 77-year-old woman has died after a bus crashed into a shop in Manchester.

Almena Amica - who was known as Mena - was taken to hospital with serious injuries following the incident in Piccadilly Gardens on Monday afternoon.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said on Tuesday she has since died - as her family paid tribute to her and thanked people who came to her aid.

Officers said she was pedestrian and was not a passenger on the bus.

A 64-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and has since been bailed.

Eleven other people, both pedestrians and those on board the bus, were injured. Some were treated at the scene, with the rest taken to hospital with minor injuries.

In a statement, Ms Amica's family said: "Mena was dedicated to her family, friends and faith.

"She loved music, gardening, TV soaps and nature. She was the senior member of our family, the eldest sister and great-great-aunt.

"She was well-loved, our matriarch, and her presence will be hugely missed."

The family added: "We thank all the services and people who came to her aid."

Photos from the scene showed the bus smashed into a bubble tea shop called T4.

A spokesperson for the chain said on Monday that its staff were "okay although shaken up".

Sergeant Louise Warhurst, from GMP's serious Injury collision unit, appealed for witnesses to come forward.

She added: "This was a tragic incident witnessed by a lot of people in a busy area of the city centre.

"The investigation is progressing thanks to many calls with information received from the public."
