How Luton Airport fire is affecting flights - here's what we know

Flights from Luton Airport were cancelled on Tuesday night after a huge fire caused a terminal car park to partially collapse. 

The airport said flights would remain suspended until Wednesday afternoon.

What happened at Luton Airport?

A fire tore through the Terminal Car Park 2 around 9pm on Tuesday evening, causing the multi-storey building to partially collapse.

It is thought up to 1,500 cars may have been parked inside, however a "substantial number" were not damaged, according to the local fire service.

The newly built building is close to the terminal entrance.

Four firefighters and one member of airport staff were taken to hospital with injuries.

More than 100 firefighters were battling the blaze at its peak after Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue service declared a major incident at 9.38pm, with 15 fire engines at the scene.

In the latest update, Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue said: "Crews have controlled and extinguished the fire at Luton Airport.

"Four crews and an aerial appliance remain at the scene."

Authorities said the fire appeared to be accidental, with local fire chief Andrew Hopkinson saying there was no evidence to suggest anything to the contrary.

When will flights start again?

All flights to and from the airport are currently suspended until 3pm on Wednesday.

The airport initially suspended flights until midday, but extended this early on Wednesday morning.

About 25,000 passengers are suffering disruption, with at least 140 flights cancelled since the fire started.

Passengers due to fly today should contact their airline for the latest flight information, Luton Airport says on its website.

It asked passengers not to travel to the airport on Wednesday morning, as access is restricted.

EasyJet, which operates flights from Luton, said "airlines are currently experiencing some disruption to their flying programmes".

Ryanair said affected passengers would be contacted as soon as possible.

People on flights into Luton overnight were diverted to different airports and, according to analysis by the PA news agency, 17 landed as far away as Cardiff, Liverpool and Manchester.

How is the fire affecting traffic around the airport?

There are some road closures around the airport due to the fire.

The A1081 New Airport Way is closed both ways between A505 Kimpton Road (Airport Way roundabout) and Airport Way (Holiday Inn Roundabout).

The A505 Vauxhall Way is also closed both ways between A1081 New Airport Way (Airport Way roundabout) and Eaton Green Road (Eaton Green Roundabout).
