'Extremely dangerous' Renfrewshire rapist Clark Thomson jailed for 18-year 'campaign of terror'

October 04, 2023

An "extremely dangerous" rapist has been jailed for seven years for a "campaign of terror" spanning almost two decades.

Clark Thomson, 45, subjected three women to "horrific sexual abuse and violence".

His crimes occurred in Renfrewshire over an 18-year period, between January 2002 and November 2020.

Thomson was jailed at the High Court in Edinburgh on Tuesday after previously being convicted at the High Court in Paisley of six charges, including rape and assault to injury and danger of life.

Judge John Morris KC noted the victim impact statements which disclosed "the trauma still suffered by them" as a result of Thomson's actions.

The judge told Thomson: "Only a substantial custodial sentence is appropriate in your case."

Thomson was also added to the sex offenders' register indefinitely.

Following the court case, Detective Constable Stewart Morrison said: "Clark Thomson is an extremely dangerous individual who carried out a campaign of terror against his victims, subjecting them to horrific sexual abuse and violence.

"As a result of their incredible bravery, he was brought to account for his despicable behaviour, and I hope that this will provide them with some form of closure and enable them to move forward with their lives."

DC Morrison, who works in the Renfrewshire and Inverclyde Public Protection Unit, said it only takes one victim to speak up.

He said: "Perpetrators may think their victims will be too frightened to come forward, but it only takes one to speak up, before we begin to unravel the true extent of their crimes.

"Police Scotland takes all reports of sexual and physical violence seriously and we will continue to investigate and work closely with our partners to support victims involved."
