The Duchess of York has said she is "shocked and saddened" after the murder of her former assistant, Jenean Chapman.

The body of the 46-year-old was found inside a Dallas apartment on Monday afternoon. Police said it was a homicide case.

Who was Ms Chapman, how have her family described her and what was her relationship to Sarah Ferguson?

The Duchess of York's 'hardworking and fun' PA

Working as the Duchess of York's assistant was Ms Chapman's first job after university.

The duchess described her as "loyal, hardworking, beautiful and fun".

She spent four years in the role, according to her LinkedIn profile, with responsibilities including handling press, planning travel and arranging security.

In a post on Instagram, the duchess wrote: "My heart breaks for her family and friends.

"I heard from her just a couple of months ago and she seemed so happy."

Climbing the corporate ladder

Ms Chapman moved to Dallas, Texas, about five months ago for a new job, her family told Sky's US partner NBC News.

She was a senior vice president at Critical Mass, a digital marketing agency, at the time of her death.

"She was a force to be reckoned with, she was a role model," her sister Nicole Marshall told NBC Dallas-Fort Worth (DTW).

"I always look up to her as like what I wanted to accomplish in my corporate career," she said.

She was also about to start her own business, another sister Crystal Marshall told the news outlet.

Ms Chapman lived in New York and San Francisco before moving to Dallas.

A 'rocky' relationship

A 48-year-old man called James Patrick has been arrested in connection with her death, and police say he is expected to be charged with murder.

Her family told NBC News Ms Chapman been married to Patrick for a few months, and they had been in a turbulent relationship for years.

There had not been a wedding when the couple married, they said, and it came as a surprise.

Her sister Nicole Marshall said: "We were shocked because before that it was an on-and-off relationship. It was rocky, we were aware of that."

"The most we can just say is that the relationship was toxic," she added.

Patrick remains in jail on a $100,000 (£82,000) bond.

Tributes from family

Nicole Marshall told NBC DFW her sister "had a heart of mush" but was also an "accomplished intellectual".

"Even though she was an independent black woman, she was the definition of that, but she had that sweet softness to her as well," Crystal Marshall added.

In an Instagram post, Crystal Marshall said: "She had so much to look forward to and impacted so many people in her life.

"Even though her presence is no longer with us her light will continue to shine in our hearts and fond memories we have of her."
