Channel Tunnel terminal shut by explosives experts after suspicious vehicle stopped

September 08, 2023

Explosives experts have shut the Channel Tunnel terminal in Folkestone after a suspicious vehicle was stopped.

A man has been detained and a cordon put in place after the vehicle was stopped during a routine security check at the terminal at around 10.30am.

Police have confirmed that the security incident is not linked to the ongoing search for Daniel Khalife, the fugitive who escaped prison on Wednesday.

Access to the Folkestone terminal is currently suspended and customers are advised that travel will be severely disrupted throughout the afternoon.

In a picture obtained by Sky News, vehicles can be seen queueing amid the delays.

Customers are advised to check the LeShuttle website and social media for the latest travel information.

A driver at the terminal said a member of staff told him that the area was on lockdown on Friday morning.

There would be a delay of a couple of hours minimum, he told Sky News.

Meanwhile, police are working "night and day" to recapture Khalife, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has said.

The 21-year-old former soldier escaped from Wandsworth prison on Wednesday morning.

Speaking from Delhi, where he is at the G20 summit, Mr Sunak said: "I know people will be anxious about it but police are working very hard to recapture the individual concerned and the justice secretary has initiated an internal inquiry into the circumstances around his escape."
