Prince Louis photographer who took memorable snap of young royal nominated for prestigious award

August 19, 2023

A photographer who captured the moment Prince Louis comically covered his ears at the late Queen's Platinum Jubilee has been shortlisted for an award.

Images of the young royal, five, delighted the public as the flypast to kick off the jubilee celebrations proved to be a bit too loud for him.

Aaron Chown, of the PA news agency, captured the moment, in June 2022, and others that showed Louis in a sailor suit, covering his eyes, putting his fingers in his mouth and looking up at the planes from the Buckingham Palace balcony.

Mr Chown is among three people nominated for Royal Photographer of the Year at the annual UK Picture Editors Guild Awards.

PA photographer Jane Barlow, who took one of the last public pictures of the late Queen, has been shortlisted for Arts and Entertainment Photographer of the Year.

The photograph of the late monarch smiling beside a fireplace at Balmoral before meeting then prime minister Liz Truss on 6 September, just two days before the Queen died, has become recognisable to millions.

Similar poses more than a year on

Although more than a year has passed, nothing seems to have changed for Louis, who was spotted pulling a similar facial expression in July.

Attending the Royal International Air Tattoo with his parents, the Prince and Princess of Wales and his siblings, George, 10, and Charlotte, eight, Louis looked restless, before covering his ears as an aircraft flew overhead.

Louis also stole the show at Trooping the Colour, which marked the King's first official birthday as monarch.

A big wave, holding his nose and punching both fists into the air were among the cheeky gestures that the young prince pulled during the royal occasion in June.

Photographers from The Times, the Daily Telegraph, Getty Images, the Yorkshire Post, Reuters, AFP, and freelancers Jeff Moore, Ryan Jenkinson and Samir Hussein are also among those nominated at this year's UK Picture Editors Guild Awards.

The ceremony will be held in London on 16 October.
