August 08, 2023

A man has been remanded in custody over the death of a 12-year-old boy who was walking on a motorway.

Matthew Rycroft, of Nowell View, Leeds, appeared at Leeds Magistrates' Court on Tuesday charged with causing or allowing the death of a child and driving dangerously.

The 36-year-old is also accused of failing to provide a specimen at Leeds General Infirmary the next day.

Callum Rycroft was hit by a car while walking on the eastbound carriageway of the M62 between junctions 25 and 26 at about 9.50pm on Saturday.

West Yorkshire Police believe he was walking on the motorway with a man after an earlier collision involving an Audi Q5 on the slip road to Hartshead services.

Callum was then hit by a Toyota C-HR, police said.

Matthew Rycroft was not asked to enter any pleas to the charges during the brief hearing and will next appear at Leeds Crown Court on 5 September.

A 47-year-old man from Bolton who was arrested on Monday on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving remains in custody.
