England win third Test against Australia to keep Ashes challenge alive

July 09, 2023

England have won the third Test against Australia to keep their Ashes challenge alive.

Set a target of 251 to win, England were six wickets down with only 171 on the board at Headingly.

But they held their nerve and crossed the line after losing just one more wicket and hitting a number of boundaries.

England beat Australia by three wickets and Australia are now 2-1 ahead in the five-match series.

The fourth Test will start at Old Trafford in Manchester on 19 July.

England's three-wicket win was achieved despite captain Ben Stokes's dismissal for just 13.

Harry Brook batted with great maturity as he made a steely 75, taking a decisive chunk out of the 251-run target.

He fell with 21 still needed as the third Test descended into nerve-shredding tension, but Mark Wood cut through the anxiety with a feisty 16 not out.

Chris Woakes went on to complete a remarkable return to the Test arena by crunching the winning runs, finishing unbeaten on 32.

Wood told Sky Sports News he "had sweaty palms all the way".

"That is my first time getting England over the line with the bat so I am delighted that I managed to get some runs here," he said.

Stokes said it was good to "keep our hopes alive" after a "down to the wire game".

"We brought Woody and Woakes back into the team and it is great when you make decisions like that and they really impact the game, especially when you get over the line," he added.
