Several kilometres of double yellow lines have been painted along stretches of the B8008 Morar to Arisaig road.

Beaches along the west Highland route include the Silver Sands of Morar, Camusdarach and Traigh - with views to the Small Isles of Eigg, Rum, Muck and Canna.

Stopping on the double yellow lines could result in a £100 fine and, in some cases, vehicles being towed away.

Highland Council has implemented the traffic control measures following extensive consultation with the B8008 Working Group.

The local authority said years of inconsiderate and dangerous parking had caused congestion and put public safety at risk. Overnight parking on the roadside has also been an issue.

Councillor Ken Gowans, economy and infrastructure committee chair, said: "Public safety and access for emergency response vehicles is priority and there is no room for compromise when it comes to keeping roads clear and safe.

"The public must adhere to the new traffic control measures or risk a penalty notice or vehicle uplift for illegal parking."

The B8008 Working Group said the local area catered well for holidaymakers with motorhomes, with about 10 designated sites available - many of them with direct access to beaches.

A spokesperson for the group added: "The community welcomes thousands of visitors all year round and continues to strive to improve infrastructure throughout the area.

"However, we also need to be realistic in our ability to continue to offer the best west coast visitor experience in a sustainable and responsible way that prevents over-tourism and safety implications for both residents and visitors alike."
