June 30, 2023

A hospital patient who murdered a great-grandmother being treated on the same ward has been jailed.

Philomena Wilson, also known as Brenda, 56, launched an unprovoked attack on great-grandmother Vidya Kaur, 83, at Birmingham's City Hospital on the morning of 21 January 2021.

Wilson repeatedly punched Mrs Kaur and banged her head on the floor, leaving her with a fractured skull.

She died from her injuries three weeks later on 11 February, West Midlands Police said.

Nurses and another patient who tried to help Mrs Kaur suffered minor injuries.

Wilson, who has an acute mental disorder, was admitted to the hospital after being arrested for assault and wounding.

She initially claimed to have no recollection of the incident.

Wilson of Handsworth in Birmingham, admitted manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility at a hearing in April.

She was jailed for seven years, with an extended five-year licence period, at Birmingham Crown Court on Friday.
