The trial of the Hollywood actor Kevin Spacey has begun in London.

The two-time Oscar winner's trial is taking place at Southwark Crown Court and is expected to last four weeks.

Jurors have been warned that although they may know the actor from films and TV - and there will be widespread coverage of the case in the media - they must not discuss or research the case.

What is Spacey accused of?

Spacey faces 12 allegations in relation to four men, who have lifelong anonymity under sex offence laws.

The charges are:

Three counts of indecent assault;

Seven counts of sexual assault;

One count of causing a person to engage in sexual activity without consent;

One count of causing a person to engage in penetrative sexual activity without consent.

He has pleaded not guilty to all of them, with his lawyer Patrick Gibbs KC previously telling the court his client "strenuously denies any and all criminality in this case".

Here is a timeline of the case so far:

26 May 2022: The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) authorises charges against Spacey - five counts against three men, including four charges of sexual assault and one charge of causing a person to engage in penetrative sexual activity without consent, with the alleged offences said to have occurred between 2005 and 2013.

The charges are authorised by the CPS but the actor can only be formally charged once he travels to the UK. A few days later, he releases a statement to Good Morning America saying he will "voluntarily appear in the UK as soon as can be arranged and defend myself against these charges, which I am confident will prove my innocence".

16 June 2022: Spacey appears at Westminster Magistrates' Court in London. The actor enters no pleas at this point.

14 July 2022: Spacey appears at the Old Bailey in London, where he pleads not guilty to the five charges. A trial start date is set for 6 June 2023.

16 November 2022: The CPS authorises seven additional criminal charges against Spacey, over alleged incidents said to have taken place between 2001 and 2005. These include three counts of indecent assault, three counts of sexual assault, and one count of causing a person to engage in sexual activity without consent, all in relation to one male complainant.

16 December 2022: Spacey appears at Westminster Magistrates' Court via video-link. He enters no pleas to the additional charges - which take the total number to 12 - at this stage.

13 January 2023: Spacey appears at Southwark Crown Court in London via video-link and pleads not guilty to the additional seven charges.

21 April 2023: Spacey appears at Southwark Crown Court, again via video-link, for a pre-trial hearing, speaking only to confirm his name and that he could hear the proceedings. The trial, which will hear details of all 12 charges, is pushed back to a later date of 28 June 2023.

28 June 2023: Spacey arrives at Southwark Crown Court around two hours ahead of the trial starting, taking a moment to say good morning to photographers and journalists outside the building before heading inside. Jury selection takes place but that's it for the first day - opening arguments are listed to begin on Friday.

He is appearing under his full name Kevin Spacey Fowler and he has been granted unconditional bail.

The 63-year-old is best-known for starring in films American Beauty and The Usual Suspects and the hit Netflix show House Of Cards.

He was also artistic director at The Old Vic theatre in London between 2004 and 2015.

The judge in the case is Mr Justice Wall.
