A man has been charged with murder after the death in the south London borough of Croydon of a 76-year-old woman.

Hugo Da Silva Pires was arrested at Stansted Airport on Friday, 23 June, after the body of Nelly Akomah was discovered by paramedics at a home in Thornton Heath on Wednesday, 21 June.

The 28-year-old has been charged with murder, burglary and fraud.

A second man, Catia Feliciano, was also arrested at Stansted Airport on Friday as part of the police investigation.

The 31-year-old has been charged with fraud and perverting the course of justice.

The two men, both of Thornton Heath, are set to appear at Bromley Magistrates' Court on Monday.

Ms Akomah's family has been informed.

The Metropolitan Police says a post-mortem examination carried out on Thursday was inconclusive.

Further tests are taking place to establish a cause of death.

Ms Akomah was the leader of the Nigerian Methodist Mission UK and Ireland and a member of Tooting Methodist Church.

In a statement on Facebook, member Ayodeji Okegbile described Ms Akomah as "our long-standing leader" and a "beloved mother".

"She will always be dearly missed and our thoughts and prayers are with her loving children, grandchildren, family, Tooting Methodist Church, Nigerian Fellowship, and close friends," he added.
