TV channel apologises for mixing up rappers in 'serious mistake'

June 21, 2023

A TV channel has apologised for showing a picture of the wrong rapper on its flagship magazine show.

Welsh-language channel S4C said it was "extremely disappointed" by the "serious mistake" on the Prynhawn Da programme on Monday.

An image of Mace the Great, who is set to perform at Glastonbury on Sunday, was shown instead of Sage Todz.

In a clip which Todz shared on social media, the presenter tells the show's guests: "We know him don't we? Sage Todz, yeah. That's a great picture."

Monday's episode of Prynhawn Da is not available on BBC iPlayer or on S4C's catch-up service S4C Clic.

S4C is a public service broadcaster and the only Welsh-language TV channel which was first launched in 1982.

Sage Todz recently spoke out after Welsh festival the Eisteddfod said he could not perform due to his bilingual lyrics.

The Eisteddfod defended its decision, with the chair of its ruling board saying the event's main purpose was "to perform, compete and discuss in Welsh - and only in Welsh".

"We are extremely disappointed about a serious mistake on the Prynhawn Da programme yesterday (Monday) where another artist's picture was shown instead of the singer Sage Todz," the channel said in a statement.

"We have contacted Sage to apologise profusely for the mistake and have discussed steps with the production company to ensure this doesn't happen again.

"S4C has huge respect for Sage as one of the most exciting talents in Wales and we are currently collaborating on a number of projects with him.

"This isn't good enough and we must do better."

The programme, which is produced by Tinopolis, issued an apology in a statement released on the official Twitter account on Wednesday.

"We would like to apologise on behalf of Prynhawn Da for a mistake which happened on the programme on Monday," they said.

"During a chat on the programme we said that Sage Todz was the subject of one of the pictures on the screen, when in reality it was the artist Mace the Great in the photo.

"We apologise to Sage Todz and Mace the Great for the mistake. We're sorry for the bad feeling which has emerged from this."
