New 50p coin to mark 75th anniversary of Windrush arrivals

June 19, 2023

A new commemorative 50p coin will mark the 75th anniversary of passengers arriving in the UK on the Empire Windrush ship.

The coin, designed by artist Valda Jackson, depicts two people from the Windrush generation standing against the Union Jack and pays tribute to the British Caribbean and Commonwealth citizens who arrived in the UK between 1948 and 1973.

Ms Jackson's parents were among the generation of people invited to leave their homes in the Caribbean to work in the UK. Her parents left St Thomas, Jamaica, in the 1960s and she later joined them aged five.

Though the Empire Windrush was not the first ship to transport British Caribbean passengers to the UK after the Second World War, the people on board were mainly ex-service personnel who took up jobs that helped Britain's post-war labour shortage.

The ship's passengers disembarked at Tilbury in Essex on 22 June 1948 after arriving from Jamaica.

Ms Jackson said the coin served to "honour our parents and their legacy, and which celebrates our presence, achievements, and contributions that continue to enrich our society".

She said the coin was "more than a celebration of one moment - it is an acknowledgement of the real, lived experience of generations of ordinary working people, and, though we may have struggled, and we still struggle in so many ways, we and our descendants are, in fact, at home".

"And this is what the image - these figures and the added Union Jack - represents," she said.

Rebecca Morgan, director of collector services at the Royal Mint, said it was "committed to representing and celebrating diversity on UK coinage, and, as we approach the 75th anniversary of HMT Empire Windrush's arrival in the United Kingdom, we are honoured to be marking this important anniversary in British history on an official UK 50p coin".

Although not all Windrush generation migrants arrived on the HMT Empire Windrush ship, it has become a symbol of the wider generation of British Caribbean citizens who emigrated to the United Kingdom and "played a pivotal role in shaping modern British culture and society since the Second World War", said Ms Morgan.

The Royal Mint also collaborated with Caribbean studies specialist at the University of London Dr Juanita Cox throughout the process of creating the commemorative coin.

It is available on the Royal Mint's website in a range of precious metals and finishes, with prices starting at £11.

The Mint said it could not currently confirm whether the coin will enter general circulation.
