June 15, 2023

A second boy has died following an incident in which a group of teenagers got into trouble in a river in Cumbria.

The boy, 14, who has not been named, had been airlifted to hospital on 26 May where he was in critical condition, but died in medical care in the early hours of Thursday.

He is the second teenager to have died following the incident in the River Eden in Carlisle.

The body of 15-year-old Lewis Michael Kirkpatrick was found in the river a day after the incident.

Police had been called to a stretch of river near Rosehill at 6.41pm following reports the four boys were struggling in the water.

A search was then carried out.

One boy managed to swim to safety, while one was rescued by a member of the public.

The force said a file will be prepared for the coroner.
