Bowie died at the age of 32 at her Florida home in early May.

Her representative Kimberly Holland confirmed on Tuesday she was in labour at the time of her death.

"Unfortunately, so many people, including the media, are making speculations that she did something to herself, which is very hurtful," Ms Holland told CBS News.

"So hopefully, now knowing the truth, there will be many apologies."

Born in Mississippi, Bowie was part of the US gold-medal-winning 4x100m relay team at the 2016 Rio Olympics. She also claimed a silver medal for the individual 100m and a bronze for 200m.

Bowie became 100m world champion in 2017 after winning gold at the event in London.

Responding to the news of her death at the time, two-time world 200m champion and US record holder Noah Lyles wrote on Twitter: "This breaks my heart to hear, and I will keep the family in my prayers."

Jamaica's three-time Olympic champion Shelly Ann Fraser-Pryce wrote: "My heart breaks for the family of Tori Bowie. A great competitor and source of light. Your energy and smile will always be with me. Rest in peace."
