Nottingham attack: Three people dead and man arrested on suspicion of murder after 'major incident'

June 13, 2023

Three people have died and a man has been arrested after a string of attacks in Nottingham.

Police declared a "serious incident" after being called to multiple locations and cordoned off several streets in the city.

Two people were found dead in the street in Ilkeston Road just after 4am on Tuesday.

Officers were then called to Milton Street just over a mile away where a van driver had attempted to run over three people in what police believe is a connected incident. Those injured are currently being treated in hospital with one of them in a critical condition.

A third man was found dead in Magdala Road nearby.

Officers and other emergency services remain at several locations across the city.

Police have arrested a 31-year-old man on suspicion of murder and he remains in custody.

Footage appears to show a suspect on the ground next to a white van as three officers carry out the arrest on Bentinck Road in Nottingham.

Photos which appear to feature the van used in the attack show the vehicle with small circular cracks at the bottom of the windscreen.

There also appears to be damage to the bumper caused by impact.

A bag can be seen on the road next to the van but it is unclear if it belonged to the attacker.

Meanwhile, Sky News correspondent Becky Johnson reported seeing a "flurry of activity" as armed police cut off Ilkeston Road at around 12.30 this afternoon.

She said police appeared to enter a commercial property on the street, with two young women eventually put in the back of a marked car.

A number of unmarked police vehicles carrying armed officers eventually then left after the section of the road was cordoned off.

Police have said they are keeping an "open mind" over the motive of the attack and are not looking for anyone else in connection with the deaths.

They added they are working alongside counter-terrorism police as they normally would in these types of circumstances.

Man and woman 'stabbed' by attacker 'dressed all in black'

A witness told the BBC he saw a young man and young woman being stabbed on Ilkeston Road, close to the junction with Bright Street in Nottingham, at around 4am.

The man, who did not give his name, said he heard "awful, blood-curdling screams" and looked out of his window to see a "black guy dressed all in black with a hood and rucksack grappling with some people".

He told the broadcaster: "She was screaming 'Help!' I just wish I'd shouted something out of the window to unnerve the assailant.

"I saw him stab the lad first and then the woman. It was repeated stabbing - four or five times. The lad collapsed in the middle of the road.

"The girl stumbled towards a house and didn't move. The next minute she had disappeared down the side of a house, and that's where they found her.

"I'd say it all happened within five or six minutes. The attacker then just walked off up Ilkeston Road towards town, as calm as anything."

The man said he called the police who arrived within five minutes, before paramedics tried to revive the pair for 40 minutes.

'I saw two people on the floor'

An eyewitness who gave her name only as Frances told Sky News she heard a sudden "bang" followed by "screaming" as a white van drove into two people in Nottingham city centre.

She said: "I just got off the bus with around 40 other people and we were walking along Market Square to catch our next bus, crossed over the road at Theatre Royal and got around 10 feet down the road when all of a sudden you heard a bang which sounded like a vehicle hitting a bollard.

"I turned around and then saw the two people on the floor, on the road.

"Someone was screaming, I think a gentleman ran over to help as well.

"Then it just went from there, the police were there straight away, then the ambulance arrived and they got the two people in the ambulance and got them sent off to whichever hospital."

'I saw him get arrested'

Kane Brady, a student at the University of Nottingham, said he saw a knife being taken from a white van after a man was arrested outside his house on Maples Street.

"We woke up to shouts of 'armed police' and what... sounded like some very loud noises, what sounded like gunshots - it was that loud.

"I looked out the bedroom window and saw Tasers. I saw a man being dragged out (of the van) and pinned to the floor.

"I saw him getting arrested, him trying to resist.

"I then later saw when they opened the van, I saw a large knife being pulled out and then straight away that's when police closed off both roads, both Maples Street and Bentinck Road," he told GB News.

'My heart is still racing'

A man who lives in Nottingham told Sky News how he was awoken at around 5.20am today by "siren after siren".

"It was like there was a barrage of vehicles heading towards that area.

"It lasted about half an hour to 40 minutes and I sent a message to my girlfriend at 6am and said something big has happened here.

"I've never heard anything like it in terms of the response of the emergency services."

He said people were then told to avoid the city centre.

"It has just caused devastation, it's the only way I can describe it," he said.

"My heart is still racing from something that I found out over an hour ago.

"Nottingham is such a supportive close-knit community. It's just rattled the city. It is shocking."

The Nottingham Express Transit (NET) tram network said it has suspended all services due to "major police incidents around the city and suburbs".

Road closures in place this morning cover a wide area of the city centre, including Ilkeston Road, Milton Street, Maples Street and Woodborough Road, from the junction with Magdala Road into the city, Magdala Road and Maid Marian Way at the junction of Parliament Street.

Sunak and Starmer say their thoughts are with families

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has tweeted: "I want to thank the police and emergency services for their ongoing response to the shocking incident in Nottingham this morning.

"I am being kept updated on developments. The police must be given the time to undertake their work.

"My thoughts are with those injured, and the family and loved ones of those who have lost their lives."

Home Secretary Suella Braverman tweeted to say she is "shocked and saddened" by the tragedy and has spoken to the chief of Nottinghamshire Police.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer said his thoughts were with the family and friends of those who had died and were injured in Nottingham.
