Joshua Lloyd Roberts, 19, died after a collision in Caeathro, Gwynedd, on Friday night.

Mr Roberts, from the Caernarfon area, was a second-year sports performance analysis student at Cardiff Metropolitan University.

His family said they were "heartbroken" and said he "always had a lovely smile on his face".

North Wales Police were called at 11.06pm on Friday 2 June to reports that a man had been discovered on Ffordd Waunfawr, Caeathro.

The force said a 19-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, failing to stop after a collision and failing to report a collision.

The man has since been released on bail as police continue their enquiries.

Osian Tudur, a friend of Mr Roberts since their school days, told Sky News he was "popular and likeable".

"Seeing all these messages and the support from people is really incredible," he said.

"The original target when the Go Fund Me page was created was £1,000, but in just over 24 hours it's already on £10,000 already.

"The support is amazing, everyone is coming together to try and help. This is the least we can all do, but hopefully it's some kind of help to the family at such a difficult time."

Mr Tudur said he was "good friends" with Mr Roberts since starting at secondary school and followed Caernarfon Town "up and down the country".

"He was a unique character, funny, sweet, he had the ability to get on with anyone. He will be greatly missed."

'Great loss'

Mr Roberts's family said in their tribute he was "devoted to all his family and would give anyone his time".

He was a "passionate football fan and enjoyed supporting Everton and his hometown of Caernarfon".

He played for the Gym Gym Society at Cardiff and also played for Bontnewydd FC.

Bontnewydd and Caernarfon Town will play a friendly in memory of Mr Roberts on Thursday evening, with donations going to support his family.

There will be a minute's silence at Bontnewydd FC's ground Cae Stanley before the game which kicks off at 6.30pm.

Chris Garlick, chairman of Bontnewydd FC, told Sky News Mr Roberts would be a "great loss to the club and all his friends" and that "football was in his heart".

"Hopefully there will be a good turnout there from what we expect," he said, "to remember the young boy who had the whole world ahead of him".

He thanked the first team manager, Simon Jones, and said "I hope we can give him a good send-off".

Inspector Iwan Roberts from North Wales Police Roads Policing Unit said the victim's family is being supported by specialist officers.

"Our heartfelt condolences remain with Joshua's family at this incredibly difficult time," he said.

Officers continue to appeal for anyone who may have been travelling in the area at around or shortly before 11pm on 2 June to get in touch.

They are also appealing for any dashcam footage as they continue to explore "several lines of enquiry".
