Championship play-off final: Luton beat Coventry on penalties to win promotion to Premier League for first time ever

May 27, 2023

Luton has been promoted to the Premier League for the first time in their history after beating Coventry on penalties in the Championship play-off final.

A perfect six spot kicks were enough to secure victory for the Hatters, who will now compete in the top flight of English football for the first time since 1992.

They were relegated from the old first division that year, painfully missing out on being part of the Premier League's inaugural season, which began just months later.

Their promotion comes just nine years on from ending a five-season stretch in the National League - the fifth tier.

The Championship play-off final is often dubbed "the richest game in football" due to the huge amount of revenue England's top clubs generate each season.

Luton are expected to receive more than £170m in future earnings for gaining promotion to the Premier League, the richest league in world football.

Their home ground, Kenilworth Road, will instantly become the smallest stadium in the division, with its capacity of around 10,000.

How dramatic match unfolded

Saturday's show-piece match at Wembley went right to the wire after extra-time ended with the scores level at 1-1.

Jordan Clark's fine finish in the 23rd minute put the Hatters ahead during a tense affair, and Gustavo Hamer levelled things up past the hour mark.

With the scores level after 90 minutes, extra-time beckoned - and Joe Taylor thought he'd written his name into Luton folklore with what looked like a late winner.

But his apparent goal in the 116th minute was ruled out by VAR for handball, and the match went to penalties.

After five perfect spot kicks from both sides, the shoot-out entered sudden death territory and Luton ended up 6-5 winners after Fankaty Dabo sent the ball over the crossbar.

Coventry were trying to return to the Premier League for the first time since being relegated in 2001 following a 34-year stint in the first division.

Luton had suffered a shock at the start of the match as captain Tom Lockyer fell to the ground while back peddling and appeared to collapse as he tried to get up.

He remained on the ground for several minutes, receiving medical attention.

The Welsh defender was carried off on a stretcher and taken to hospital for further medical checks.

Luton said on Twitter that "after collapsing on the pitch, Tom Lockyer has been taken to hospital for further tests. He is responsive and talking to his family, who are with him."

The club also posted a picture of Lockyer celebrating the club's win from his hospital bed.

Speaking to Sky Sports Football, Luton manager Rob Edwards said: "It feels incredible, but the only thing I'm thinking of right now is Tom Lockyer.

"He's been immense for us this season. Health and family is the most important thing, and I don't care right now until he is alright.

"That's where my head is at the moment. It felt a little bit wrong to celebrate at the time. I just felt emotional."

"I am incredibly proud of my group of players," the manager added.

"For Locks, who's been our best player this season, to go off after four or five minutes, for the lads then to organise themselves, deal with seeing their captain coming off like that, emotionally, in this atmosphere, on the biggest day, they dealt with that so well."

Luton's win also saw Pelly Ruddock Mpanzu become the first play to rise from non-league to the Premier League with the same club.

He said: "I've completed football! I'll retire this summer! It's been a journey, through the highs and lows, but you've got to believe in yourself. Here I am, a Premier League player.

"The party is tonight, tomorrow, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and then Thursday - VEGAS!"

The club also celebrated their win on the social media site, posting a picture of the entrance to Kenilworth Road.
