May 01, 2023

The family of a man who died after a group of people were stabbed near a nightclub in Cornwall have described him as a "much-loved son, brother, grandson, and uncle".

Michael Allen, 32, from Liskeard, died after officers were called to the area of Victoria Square on Castle Canyke Road in Bodmin, at 3.15am on Sunday following a report of a serious altercation.

Police were told that someone was in possession of a knife and multiple people had sustained suspected stab wounds.

A 24-year-old man from Bodmin was arrested on Sunday on suspicion of murder, attempted murder and causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

Police have today been given an extension by magistrates to allow extra time to detain the suspect.

Seven other men and women were injured and were taken to hospital.

Five have since been released with two people remaining in hospital as they recover from surgery following the attack, police said.

The family of Mr Allen, who police previously stated was 35, has since released a picture and a tribute.

They said: "Mike was simply much-loved son, brother, grandson, and uncle who loved his dogs.

"His family would like to respectfully request privacy at this time".

A tribute site has been set up at Bodmin Rugby Club, where people can gather to remember the victim.

Officers from Devon and Cornwall Police will be there to help support the local community.

The club has also since posted a tribute to Mr Allen on Facebook as members remembered a "big part" of the squad.

"It is with great sadness that we can now announce the passing of our player and friend Mike Allen (Chabel)," they said.

"Mike came to the club earlier this season and quickly became a big part of our squad. His humour and kindness has left a mark on us all and we will miss him dearly.

"Our thoughts are with Mike's family at this devastating time."
