Wrexham: Ryan Reynolds, Rob McElhenney and the Red Dragons' 15-year wait for promotion

April 19, 2023

Wrexham have done it. They have achieved their dream of promotion after a win over Boreham Wood in the National League - but how did they get here?

The game changed for Wrexham in November 2020, when a bid by Hollywood royalty to buy the club was approved then finalised the following February.

It was bought by two familiar faces in Hollywood star Ryan Reynolds and It's All Sunny in Philadelphia co-creator Rob McElhenney.

The club is the third oldest professional football team in the world, but it has spent 15 consecutive seasons in the National League - the fifth division of the English football system.

After their 3-1 victory on Saturday, the North Wales club will be back in League Two for the first time since 2008.

Their journey over the last two and a half years is well-documented through an FX documentary series released on Disney+ in the UK - Welcome to Wrexham.

Wrexham on the world stage

Wrexham's place on the world stage was cemented when the club was a featured team in the FIFA 22 game.

The club gained new shirt sponsors with TikTok and Expedia appearing on the team's shirts for the first time in addition to their iconic official sponsors Ifor Williams Trailers.

There have also been many famous faces who have watched them in action including David Beckham, Will Ferrell and actress Blake Lively who is also married to co-owner Ryan Reynolds.

Rob McElhenney's It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia co-stars recently joined him to watch the Red Dragons face Yeovil at home.

Actors John Cleese and Jason Watkins have also revealed their support of the team having been pictured sporting Wrexham shirts.

The King and Queen Consort visited the Racecourse to learn about the ongoing redevelopment of the ground in December.

Wrexham itself was granted city status as part of Queen Elizabeth II's platinum jubilee celebrations in 2022.

Signings and successes

After a disappointing first few months as owners, several changes were made to the club's training room staff and players.

Dean Keates was sacked as manager in 2021 and replaced by Phil Parkinson.

Several players were let go from the squad and 14 new signings included striker Paul Mullin.

Mullin has gone on to be Wrexham's top goal scorer this season - finding the net 38 times in the league.

Wrexham broke their transfer fee record in January 2022, having signed Ollie Palmer from Wimbledon for a reported fee of £300,000.

There have been several other milestones for the club along the way.

They reached the final of the FA Trophy in 2022 but were beaten by Bromley.

The club also reached the fourth round of the FA Cup for the first time in 23 years.

Wrexham AFC Women also won promotion this season to the top flight of Welsh women's football.

They won a play-off match having finished top of the Genero Adran North this season.

With a second season of Welcome to Wrexham already in production, it seems the story of Wrexham is only just beginning.
