New Sighthill Bridge over the M8 in Glasgow expected to open by the end of March

March 14, 2023

A new bridge over the M8 is expected to officially open later this month.

The crossing - to be known as Sighthill Bridge - is part of a £250m regeneration of the north Glasgow neighbourhood, which includes more than 800 new homes.

The project is part of a wider active travel network that aims to connect Sighthill and nearby communities to the city centre.

Glasgow City Council leader Susan Aitken said: "The ongoing regeneration of Sighthill is one of the biggest projects of its kind on these islands - and the completion of this remarkable bridge is a real landmark in that journey.

"It signals the reconnection of Sighthill with not only the city centre but also neighbouring communities in north Glasgow."

On Monday, Glasgow City Council said the "landmark cyclist, pedestrian and wheeler" bridge would "soon open to the public".

A further inspection is due to take place. All going well, Sky News understands that the bridge will officially open by the end of March.

The crossing, which weighs 1,000 tonnes and is more than 74 metres in length, has a landscaped approach that includes 800 trees, 10,000 plants and a ramp of 210 metres.

The main span is made of Cor-Ten Steel, which the council said will result in lower maintenance costs. It has also been designed to reflect the area's industrial heritage and the front of the local St Martin's Primary School campus.

The bridge was funded through the Glasgow City Region City Deal, with additional funding from walking, wheeling and cycling charity Sustrans.

'An important achievement for Sighthill'

Karen McGregor, Scotland director at Sustrans, said: "This new link is an important achievement for Sighthill, allowing many more people in the area to leave the car at home when making their everyday journeys.

"The new bridge not only provides a safe and accessible walking, wheeling, and cycling link across the M8 corridor, it also connects Sighthill residents with National Cycle Network Route 754 along the Forth & Clyde Canal as well as amenities and wider active travel links in Glasgow city centre."
