Sheffield City Council mistakenly flew the Saltire, Scotland's national flag, instead of the flag of St David.

The local authority later replaced the blue and white St Andrew's Cross with the correct one on its town hall flagpole.

A council spokesperson said: "As soon as we knew, we rectified this immediately."

The error was spotted by photographer The Steel City Snapper.

Posting a number of pictures on Twitter, the photographer said: "Oh dear, Sheffield City Council seem to be flying the Scottish flag of St Andrew, the Saltire, rather than the Welsh flag of St David on St David's Day, oops."

In response, the council added: "We are really sorry that the incorrect flag was flown above the town hall."

This isn't the first time Sheffield City Council has had to apologise over a flag blunder.

Back in 2019 it flew a Welsh flag on St Patrick's Day.

At the time, a council spokesperson said a "basic error" was to blame and apologised for any offence caused.
