Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been asked to vacate Frogmore Cottage, spokesperson says

March 01, 2023

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been asked to "vacate" their UK residence, a spokesperson for the couple has said.

Harry and Meghan's spokesperson said a "request" had been made for them to give up Frogmore Cottage, near Windsor Castle.

The spokesperson said: "We can confirm the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been requested to vacate their residence at Frogmore Cottage."

Reports have claimed the move, which removes their final remaining foothold in the UK, was sanctioned by the King.

It comes weeks after the Duke of Sussex's book Spare was released, which revealed deep rifts between him and the rest of the royal family.

The cottage, which sits within the grounds of Windsor Castle, is a Grade-II listed building with ten bedrooms and was gifted to the couple by the Queen.

Harry and Meghan did up the property in 2018 at a cost of £2.4 million - which was initially covered by taxpayer money.

However, the couple later paid back the money from the Sovereign Grant in full.

Last year, they spent their daughter's first birthday at the property.

In 2020, the pair left their roles as working members of the royal family and moved to California, where they currently live with their children.

Since the release of the pair's Netflix documentary that charted their move away from the royals, Prince Harry has gone on to give several broadcast interviews about his book, revealing more details about the relationship between him, his father and his brother.

Revelations from his book and subsequent interviews include him asking his father not to marry Camilla, now the Queen Consort; Meghan not being invited to Balmoral when the Queen died last September; and claims his brother physically attacked him.
