Rising Stars childcare centres in Glasgow to close after 'running at a loss for some time'

March 01, 2023

A leading childcare provider in Glasgow has announced it is closing.

Facilities run by Rising Stars are set to shut permanently on 31 March.

Jobs and Business Glasgow (JBG), which runs the centres, said it was "not viable" to continue operations.

The closure affects services across the city, including in Govan, Pollok, the Gorbals, Bridgeton and Easterhouse.

JGB said it has been unable to find a buyer for the brand and estate.

Parents and carers were informed of the news last month.

In the letter, written by JBG managing director Gary Hay, it was stated that no employee would face compulsory redundancy.

He explained that the childcare services were first established in the 1990s by the former East End Partnership and Govan Initiative, but the funding that enabled services to be subsidised no longer existed.

The childcare services were said to have performed at a loss "for some time", with the losses having been met from JBG's charitable reserves.

Mr Hay stated: "I do appreciate that this may be difficult news to hear and I don't underestimate the impact and potential disruption for your family."

JBG is now working with Glasgow City Council's education services to support childcare needs.

The council has committed to supporting families to help make the transition as smooth as possible once services cease.

Why is childcare so expensive?

'We apologise for any inconveniences'

A JBG spokesperson said: "We apologise for any inconveniences we know the closure of the service will have on families.

"The business case review has been taking place for some time now and a search for a private childcare provider to take over the brand and estate has been unsuccessful in the current climate.

"It is unfortunately not viable to keep operating as a going concern."
