Two NHS nurses have died after they were involved in a crash near to the Grand Canyon.

Tatiana Brandao, 30, and Raquel Moreira, 28, were rear passengers in a Jeep when it was involved in a collision with a bus.

The pair, who both worked at University Hospital Southampton (UHS), Hampshire, were on holiday in the US at the time.

The crash took place around 8am local time on Friday on a highway in Arizona, which serves as an entrance to the south rim of the Grand Canyon.

On Friday, bosses at UHS paid tribute to the two women.

Gail Byrne, UHS chief nursing officer, said: "The entire nursing family at University Hospital Southampton has been left shocked and saddened by the tragic deaths of two much-loved colleagues as they enjoyed a holiday together in America.

Ms Byrne said the women were Portuguese nationals.

Tatiana joined the trust seven years ago and was described by Ms Byrne as a "highly respected member of the neurology department".

Raquel had worked at UHS for the past five years and was a "very valued part of the stroke advanced clinical practice (ACP) team".
