February 06, 2023

A climber has died in Snowdonia after falling a "considerable distance" when a handhold broke.

He was climbing the Y Gribin ridge with two others on Saturday, said Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Organisation (Ovmro).

Rescue teams were called out to the area between the Glyder Fawr and Glyder Fach peaks, and his body was retrieved with help from the coastguard helicopter on Sunday.

"Three young men were ascending the Gribin ridge when a handhold broke away, causing one to fall a considerable distance," said an Ovmro spokesman.

"Sadly, he did not survive his injuries.

"The recovery continued through to Sunday lunchtime with the help of the coastguard rescue helicopter.

"The thoughts of all team members are with the casualty's family and friends."
