Brixton O2 Academy: Venue's licence suspended after two people die following crowd crush

December 22, 2022

The O2 Academy Brixton has had its licence temporarily suspended after two people died following a crowd crush.

Security guard Gaby Hutchinson, 23, and mother-of-two Rebecca Ikumelo, 33, died in hospital following the incident at the south London venue on 15 December.

A 21-year-old woman was also injured in the incident, which took place as fans without tickets attempted to get into a show by Nigerian artist Asake.

She remains in hospital in a critical condition.

On Thursday, Lambeth Council's licensing sub-committee agreed to suspend the venue's licence until a further meeting on 16 January next year.

The O2 Academy Brixton had offered a voluntary closure until that date before the meeting.

The removal of the licence means the venue will be forced to close, including for New Year's Eve, when it was planning to host a drum and bass music night.

Announcing the sub-committee's decision, Cllr Fred Cowell said: "The sub-committee accepts the licence-holder's offer to voluntarily close has been made in good faith.

"They have already cancelled a New Year's Eve event and will cancel other events between now and January 16, 2023.

"However, counsel for the licence-holder... accepted that a voluntary undertaking by his client is not enforceable in law were it to be breached.

"The sub-committee's focus today is on measures necessary to prevent serious crime or serious disorder or both at the venue.

"The sub-committee is aware that investigations are at an early stage and the facts that led up to the fatal incident are not entirely clear.

"However, in the view of the licensing sub-committee, given the severity of events of December 15, the risks to public safety as a consequence of, in particular, serious disorder rising from a lack of crowd control at the front doors of the venue remain high if the venue were able to operate as before."

Cllr Cowell said the decision should not be taken as an indication as to what the sub-committee will conclude at the next meeting in January.

Earlier this month, police confirmed Rebecca Ikumelo had died following the crush. Her family described the 33-year-old as an "adorable mother" known for her "care, kindness and love".

Ms Ikumelo, a mother-of-two from Newham, east London, was well known for her TikTok posts about parenting an autistic child.

On Monday, Gaby Hutchinson was confirmed as the second person to die following the crush.

The 23-year-old was working as one of the contracted security providers for the event that evening.

Both were in the foyer of the building when they were critically injured in the crush, the Metropolitan Police said.

Eight people were taken to hospital with injuries following the incident.

Nigerian musician Asake was forced to abandon the gig after performing three songs and released a statement saying his "heart is with those who were injured".

His manager, Stephen Nana, told Sky News he was "completely speechless and lost for words" after Hutchinson's death was announced.

"We only came to entertain and perform. Never thought that anything like this would happen."

The Met Police have set up an online portal for people to submit information, photographs and videos of the incident, which is believed to have been seen by around 4,000 witnesses. Anyone who can help is urged to come forward.
