In a 15-second clip, the former president told his followers that "America needs a superhero" before sharing a cartoon of himself posing like Superman outside Trump Tower.

The animation showed the 76-year-old ripping his shirt open to reveal a superhero costume, six-pack abs and lasers firing out of his eyes.

Following the clip and cartoon, a sign came up saying "MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT THURSDAY DECEMBER 15TH".

Last month Mr Trump announced his intention to run for the presidency again in 2024, but there is so far no further clue what the teased announcement may be.

There is speculation about what it might be, with the suggestion that he may be about to reveal his running mate or return to his previously favoured social media platform of Twitter after his account was reinstated following Elon Musk's takeover.

Truth Social was launched last year following Mr Trump's ejection from Twitter in the wake of the January 6th storming of the Capitol in 2020.

Mr Trump has previously shared pop culture related memes having, foreshadowed sanctions on Iran by tweeting a Game of Thrones style image of himself as well as a fan made video of himself set to music from the Batman film The Dark Knight Rises.

The former president is struggling to gain support after a disappointing midterm election for many of his supporters, with several high profile candidates he endorsed failing to win.

His office has also found itself in hot water after it was held in contempt for failing to comply with a subpoena.

On top of those headaches, Mr Trump's real estate company was recently found guilty of running a criminal scheme to defraud tax authorities over the last 15 years, although Mr Trump was not personally charged in the case.
