The cost of lighting up a Christmas tree - and why you should bin your old lights

November 30, 2022

UK households will spend approximately £189m (roughly £7 per household) to light up their Christmas tree this year - more than double the £73m (or £3 per household) it cost last year.

But those who fail to switch to LED lights face an even bigger charge, spending an extra £27 over the festive period.

The difference between LED and non-LED lights in terms of energy usage is stark. According to the Energy Saving Trust, LED bulbs use 80% less energy than halogen bulbs.

And from a financial standpoint, LEDs will typically cost £6.79 to light up a tree throughout the festive period - rising to a staggering £33.95 for halogen ones.

While halogen lights are now banned in the UK, many people still own old sets. And it’s not just the cost of energy to consider - LEDs are far safer than halogen, as they do not become hot and pose a fire risk.

London Fire Brigade's assistant commissioner for fire safety, Charlie Pugsley, said: "The run-up to Christmas is full of lovely festive traditions but don't let it all go up in smoke.

"All too often this year, our crews have seen their own real-life version of Nightmare Before Christmas, with several serious fires due to halogen lamps.

"Disaster strikes for Santa's stockings and decorations when they're kept too close to these lights. We'd always recommend a LED light as they are far safer from a fire prevention point of view."

Like incandescent bulbs, most halogen bulbs can be disposed of with your normal household waste. But it is a good idea to wrap the bulbs in something before you throw them out in case they shatter.

Unlike their LED counterparts, these lights are not easily recycled because they contain halogen gas.

If you are concerned about throwing them in the bin, most household waste disposal centres have a dedicated section for old lights. Always check the rules of your local authority in case their policy differs.
