The dogs were electrocuted at Cuckavalda Gundogs in Ampleforth, North Yorkshire at about 4pm on Wednesday, the kennel said.

In a Facebook post the kennel owners said two cocker spaniels and 11 labradors died when a tree blown over in the storm took down the 11,000-volt electricity cable which hit the block and electrified the dogs' runs.

"It is with a heavy heart we would like you to know. Cuckavalda Gundogs have had a tragic accident around 4pm yesterday," they wrote on Facebook.

"A tree blow down taking a powerline of 11k vol with it which fell on the kennel block, with electrified the runs. Unfortunately 13 dogs lost their lives."

It said an investigation was under way by Northern Power Grid.

The two cocker spaniels were named Troy and Olive, while the labradors were named Guy, Goldie, Poret, Dill, Dora, Rick, Cora, Polly, Tilly, Ivy and Rose.

"RIP you beautiful creatures - all taken far too young - Aged between 7 months and 6 years," the owners wrote.

Storm Dudley left thousands of homes without power as it swept through the UK earlier this week.

Dozens of train companies were affected with lines blocked due to damage to overhead electric wires.

It comes ahead of Storm Eunice, which is expected to bring winds in excess of 95mph to coastal areas and 80mph inland on Friday.
