UK weather: Dreams of a white Christmas come true in parts of the North - with heavy rain forecast later for some

December 25, 2021

Dreams of a white Christmas have come true for some in the Scottish Highlands and the Pennines.

Shetland, Aboyne, Strathallan and parts of the Pennines have already recorded some snow this morning, with the Met Office confirming a White Christmas.

Elsewhere, rain is due to spread northeast across the UK on Christmas Day, but it won't reach Scotland, northern and eastern England until tonight.

The rain will be heavy for some, with a yellow weather warning in place for parts of County Down and Armagh in Northern Ireland from this afternoon.

Between 25mm and 40mm of rain is forecast there by mid-morning on Boxing Day, with up to 60mm possible.

After the recent wet weather there, local flooding is a risk.

Scotland and northern England will have the best chance of sunshine today, but it will feel cold there, especially in the wind.

Tonight, as the rain pushes into the colder air, it will turn increasingly to snow over northern hills, but it won't reach northern Scotland.

A yellow warning for snow covers the Pennines, the Cumbrian Fells and the Southern Uplands on Sunday. Strong winds there will bring blizzard conditions too.

There will be further snow on northern hills on Boxing Day, but it will turn light and patchy during the morning.
