Prince Philip: Service of thanksgiving for the life of the Duke of Edinburgh to take place in spring next year

December 23, 2021

A service of thanksgiving for the life of Prince Philip will take place at Westminster Abbey in spring next year, Buckingham Palace has said.

It is understood the date will be confirmed in due course and the guestlist is being finalised.

It is thought the service will consist of family, friends, dignitaries and representatives of the charities and organisations which Philip was associated with.

The Duke of Edinburgh, who was the Queen's husband of 73 years, died aged 99 in April.

Only 30 guests were allowed to attend his funeral service at St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle due to coronavirus restrictions.

Thames Valley Police also warned people to stay away due to the strict coronavirus guidance that was in place at the time.

Only a few people were present in the Berkshire town during the morning of the funeral, however, hundreds congregated outside the castle to pay their respects to him later in the day as he was laid to rest.

The service has been announced after the first picture of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's daughter Lilibet was released in a Christmas card.

The photograph shows Harry hugging their son Archie as Meghan raises Lilibet into the air.

Earlier on Thursday it was confirmed the Queen will spend Christmas Day with the Prince Charles and Camilla.

The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall will join the 95-year-old monarch at Windsor, after spending last Christmas at Highgrove, their country estate in Gloucestershire.

It comes after Princess Anne's husband Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence tested positive for coronavirus on Wednesday, meaning they will now not be spending Christmas with the Queen due to being in isolation.

Prince William and Kate will be spending Christmas at their home in Norfolk and will be joined by members of the Middleton family.
