Scotland's chances of reaching knockout stages of Euros suffer further blow after draw with Switzerland

June 19, 2024

Scotland's chances of reaching the knockout stages of a major tournament for the first time have suffered a further blow after they drew 1-1 with Switzerland in Cologne.

Steve Clarke's side put in a more positive performance after their 5-1 thrashing at the hands of Germany on the opening day of the Euros but couldn't secure a much-needed three points.

Scott McTominay's deflected strike had given Scotland the lead after 13 minutes, but celebrations were short-lived after former Liverpool star Xherdan Shaqiri equalised on the 26-minute mark.

The draw means Scotland sit third in Group A with a single point.

Sky Sports' expert Nick Wright called it a "much improved showing overall".

Only the top two teams in each group automatically go through to the knockout stages.
