Hospital trust investigating after mother handed wrong baby at Dorset hospital

A hospital trust in Dorset has said it is investigating after a baby was handed to the wrong mother.

The incident occurred at the maternity unit at Poole Hospital in September 2023, University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust - which runs the hospital - confirmed.

Lorraine Tonge, director of midwifery at the trust, said on Wednesday: "We deeply regret any distress that was caused and have reached out to the mother to offer her support.

"We would urge her to get back in touch with us to assist us in our investigation.

"The safety of our parents and babies is the highest priority and we are committed to providing full support to the affected families."

The trust's website describes the incident as "isolated".

The University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust was formed following the merger of three hospitals - Poole Hospital, the Royal Bournemouth Hospital and Christchurch Hospital - in southeast Dorset.
