Arsenal Women 1-0 Chelsea Women (AET): Stina Blackstenius strikes in extra-time as Gunners retain Conti Cup

March 31, 2024

Stina Blackstenius scored late in extra-time as Arsenal beat Chelsea 1-0 to win the Conti Cup for a second successive year.

Play stopped for seven minutes in stoppage-time of regulation time after Frida Maanum collapsed off the ball, but she is now in a stable condition, conscious and talking.

Arsenal were able to overcome this adversity and struck in the 116th minute as Blackstenius redeemed herself after missing a good chance earlier in extra-time to seal a record seventh Conti Cup win for the Gunners.

Chelsea could not keep up with Arsenal - who beat them 3-1 in last season's final - in what was their eighth game in March and the defeat ends their chances of winning the quadruple in Emma Hayes' final season in charge.

Tensions boiled over at the end of the game as Arsenal boss Jonas Eidevall and Hayes clashed, bringing this managerial rivalry to an end with a bitter taste.

Hayes was unhappy with Eidevall's conduct on the touchline and said he was fortunate to only receive a booking. "I don't think we should tolerate male aggression like we did today," she told BBC Sport. "Fronting up or squaring up to a player is unacceptable."

Eidevall defended his conduct and explained that the issue with Erin Cuthbert arose because Chelsea had asked to play without a multi-ball system but tried to use another ball late on when seeking an equaliser.

"I can't see that I did anything, had any form of contact with anyone - either a player or a coach," he added. "To be honest, I can't really take it seriously [being accused of aggression]."

How Arsenal overcame Chelsea in extra-time

Chelsea had the better of the early running, but the first half belonged to Arsenal. It seemed like it would be a tough day for the Gunners' back line when Lauren James stung the palms of Manuela Zinsberger inside 10 minutes.

James went down looking for a penalty not long after, falling over the leg of Kim Little, but it was never a foul. From this point, Arsenal took charge and could have been through on goal had it not been for the unconventional and pro-active goalkeeping of Hannah Hampton.

Just as it felt Arsenal were dominating the game, Chelsea struck a hammer blow with Mayra Ramirez fizzing in a shot from range. However, VAR stepped in to rule the goal out due to a deliberate handball by Erin Cuthbert in the build-up.

Arsenal, buoyed by this let-off, continued to put Chelsea under pressure, with their best chances coming through a long-range Katie McCabe strike and Lotte Wubben-Moy's volley. It wasn't until late in the game that either side got a clear sight of goal, though.

The frustration told for James as she was booked early in the second half for stepping into Laia Codina, a half-time replacement for Leah Williamson. Chelsea grew into the game but Victoria Pelova blocked Ramirez's goal-bound shot.

Arsenal failed to take the best chance of the game with 25 minutes to go as Cloe Lacasse failed to beat Hampton when through on goal. The Chelsea goalkeeper shut down the angle but the finish was unconvincing.

As the chances came and went for Arsenal, it felt as if Chelsea would punish them but Johanna Rytting Kaneryd's execution let her down when cutting the ball back to Ramirez with space in the box.

Chelsea had another chance to win it late on through James, who had options square but chose to shoot at an angle and saw her effort saved by the leg of Zinsberger.

Play was stopped for seven minutes in stoppage-time after Maanum collapsed. The medical staff and paramedics on site treated her before she was stretchered off. Arsenal later provided a positive update on her condition.

The mood at Molinuex was subdued before the good news filtered through about Maanum and the flow of the game was understandably affected.

Arsenal had a good chance as McCabe headed wide from substitute Stephanie Catley's glorious cross. The offside flag was raised incorrectly with McCabe level when the ball was played.

Balckstenius wasted a good chance when she fired over from the edge of the box after being slipped in by Alessia Russo's flick on early in the second period of extra time. Penalties felt an inevitability at this stage.

But the Arsenal striker managed to make amends 10 minutes later as she finished past Hampton to redeem her earlier missed chance and seal a record seventh Conti Cup for Arsenal.

Eidevall praises Arsenal for coping under pressure

Arsenal head coach Jonas Eidevall told BBC Sport:

"I feel very happy. Happy with the performance, we were much better than the last time we played them.

"The first half was for the coaches, the second half and extra-time was for the audience. It was an entertaining game, very small margins and we fought hard. We were on the better side of it today.

"The game we had against Chelsea last time, we managed that game really poorly from a stress response situation.

"We've been speaking about how we can perform better under pressure, communicate better and what is in our control and what is not. The players did that brilliantly today."

Asked about his confrontation with Hayes, he said: "My word on what was happening would be that before the game we had a discussion between the clubs about whether to use one ball or multi-ball system.

"In this situation, Arsenal said multi-ball, Chelsea said one ball. The decision was to play the final on a one ball system.

"The ball goes out of play, the Chelsea player wants a new ball to take a quick throw-in and I said 'we play with only one ball and you guys were the ones who decided that'.

"Obviously it drives all kinds of emotions in there, nothing more, nothing less. I can't see that I did anything, had any form of contact with anyone - either a player or a coach. That was it."

"To be honest I can't really take it seriously."

Hayes: There was nothing between the teams

Chelsea boss Emma Hayes told BBC Sport: "It's a tough loss. There was nothing between the two teams, I didn't think it was a high quality game to be honest with you. They took their chance and they are winners.

"I don't make excuses. We had a big chance to win it right before the end and didn't take it. They took theirs and I can't ask for any more from the players. They gave their all today and it was a big effort from them. Congratulations to Arsenal."

Asked about Maanum, she said: "Player welfare comes first every time. I really hope she's ok. It's always worrying when that happens."

On the altercation with Eidevall: "I think there's a way to behave on the side of the pitch and not for the first time, I've been in women's football a long time and I don't think we should tolerate male aggression like we did today.

"Fronting up or squaring up to a player is something that's unacceptable. I've never been booked in 12 years of my career but I think there's a way to behave on the touchline. He received a yellow card but perhaps should have been more."
