England vs West Indies: Phil Salt's ton leads tourists to seven-wicket victory in high-scoring thriller

December 16, 2023

England opener Phil Salt smashed a historic 109 not out to lead the tourists to a seven-wicket victory against West Indies in the third T20 international.

Salt reached his first T20 ton in 51 balls as England raced to 226-3 and completed the highest successful run chase at the Grenada National Cricket Stadium to keep the series alive.

England's captain Jos Buttler and Salt got off to a commanding start as they shared an impressive 115-run opening stand.

The visitors needed 21 runs from the final over and Harry Brook (31no) smashed consecutive sixes over extra cover and fine leg to help lead England to a stunning victory.

Earlier, Nicholas Pooran (82) led the charge for the West Indies after smashing his career-best T20I score to help the hosts post 222-6.

England's Adil Rashid (2-32) was the pick of the bowlers as he dismissed Pooran and Shai Hope (26).

West Indies batters lead the charge

England’s all-rounder Moeen Ali (1-26) struck in the first over to dismiss the dangerous Brandon King (8) early on with a delivery that gripped, turned and clattered the off-stump.

King had punished Moeen’s previous two balls through backward point and mid-off for four but struggled to get into double digits after top-scoring with an unbeaten 82 in the second T20 on Thursday.

Reece Topley (1-32), who was replacing Chris Woakes, also struck in his first spell to remove Kyle Mayers (0) for a duck with a back-of-a-length delivery that kissed the top of his bat and flew into Buttler’s gloves to leave the hosts 8-2 by the second over.

Shai Hope (26) and Pooran (82) brought things under control as they shared a 54-run partnership but the former, after hitting two sixes and one boundary, was dismissed by Rashid (2-32). Hope attempted to slog-sweep a flighted delivery from England’s leg-spinner but top-edged it to cow corner where Salt took a catch above his head.

Pooran brought up his 11th T20I half-century off 37 deliveries after he delicately dabbed a googly from Rashid to third and also smashed six boundaries and six sixes during his outing.

West Indies captain Rovman Powell (39) looked to attack immediately but his boundaries were stopped by some incredible fielding from Gus Atkinson, who leaped high to throw the ball back into the field and prevent a six.

Powell smashed three sixes and two boundaries before he spooned a bouncer from Sam Curran (2-34) up high and into the gloves of Buttler.

Curran had Sherfane Rutherford (29), who was replacing Shimron Hetmyer, caught by Salt at long on the 19th over but not before the 25-year-old hit the previous ball for six at long-off.

Some late hitting from Andre Russell (8no) and Jason Holder (18no) helped to take West Indies from a modest 197-6 to a commanding 222-6.

West Indies fail to find breakthrough in run chase

Buttler top edged a short ball from Russell to deep backward square leg where Akeal Hosein (0-44) and Alzarri Joseph completed an impressive relay catch. The momentum of the ball took Hosein over the rope but he tossed the ball to Joseph who met him at fine leg.

Gudakesh Motie (1-30) struck in the 13th over to remove Will Jacks (one) with a back-of-a-length ball that feathered through to West Indies wicketkeeper Pooran.

England managed to stay within the run-rate throughout their innings but still needed 31 runs from the final three overs after Liam Livingstone (30) was caught by Powell at long-on.

However, the pressure did not seem to faze Brook who blasted his first ball down the ground for six off Jason Holder (1-52).

Salt's knock included four fours and nine sixes as he shared an unbeaten 40-run partnership with Brook, the latter eventually smashing a wide delivery from Russell for six to seal victory.

Salt: We talked about someone standing up as a match-winner

Player of the match Phil Salt:

"It feels like it has been a long time coming in an England shirt. It's special to do it now, especially with them being able to take the series today.

"We've been talking as a group about someone standing up and being a match-winner, and how much time you have.

"We tried to get it down to 60 or 70 off the last five, and that's what we did, and Brooky came in and finished it off at the end."

Powell: Windies gave it a fair shot

West Indies captain Rovman Powell:

"It's obviously disappointing to score 220 and lose, but the guys gave it a fair shot.

"We have quality guys on the field to do the job. It's just unfortunate it didn't come off today.

"It's just for us to sit down, take the flight tomorrow and come up with plans. I think the plans are still very good against these English batters."

What's next?

The five-match series now moves to Trinidad and Tobago for the final two fixtures on December 19 and December 21, both starting at 8pm.
